North Platte Valley Museum

Welcome! Step back in time as you visit the North Platte Valley Museum in Gering, Nebraska, a private, not-for-profit museum situated on the Oregon and Pony Express Trails in the shadow of Scotts Bluff National Monument and nearby Chimney Rock National Historic Site. Our museum tells the fascinating story of human settlement in the beautiful North Platte River Valley of western Nebraska, from early Native American cultures like the Sioux and Cheyenne, to the European farmers, ranchers and townspeople who built strong communities in a region once considered part of a "Great American Desert." When you think of the days of the old settlers, a picture of horse-drawn carriages, covered wagons, one-room schoolhouses, general stores, sod houses, and a simpler way of life enters your mind. That’s exactly what you will find at Western Nebraska’s largest historical museum, the North Platte Valley Museum, where the history of our valley comes alive. There are over two dozen displays throughout the 10,000 square foot exhibit area, ranging from a family traveling on the Oregon Trail in 1850s to Nebraska’s first female doctor in the 1890s. Outside of the museum’s main building, you will be delighted by the opportunity to tour an authentic sod house, one of fewer than a dozen of its kind in the United States, and an actual log cabin. These homes, were built in the late 1800s, contain authentic items belonging to the families who originally lived in them, as well as other period-specific items set up to give visitors a real look at how settlers lived. Also outside the museum, visitors will notice a marker indicating where the property intersects with the famed Oregon Trail. The Western History Archive is the repository for The Paul & Helen Henderson Oregon Trail Collection. This extensive collection benefits anyone interested in the Oregon Trail, as it is the most comprehensive collection ever compiled on America’s Western overland trails The role and mission of our Museum is to collect, preserve, research and interpret artifacts and other historical material relating to the rich human heritage of the North Platte Valley. We accomplish this mission with a spacious, climate-controlled of exhibit space, several outdoor structures and a friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable staff.
